Team Roping: The only team rodeo event, where two ropers work together to capture and restrain a full-grown steer. The “header” lassos the steer’s horns, while the “heeler” lassos the steer’s hind legs. Speed is of the essence, and the fastest team secures victory.
Saddle Bronc Riding: Similar to bareback riding, but riders use a specialized western saddle without a horn for safety. The goal is to stay on the bucking horse for 8 seconds, and each ride is judged for a maximum score of 100 points based on the horse’s difficulty and the cowboy’s control.
Tie-Down Roping: Also known as calf roping, this event simulates ranch work where calves are roped for various purposes. The cowboy ropes a calf’s neck, dismounts, and ties three of the calf’s legs together as quickly as possible. Speed determines the winner.
Barrel Racing: A timed speed and agility event exclusively for women in professional rodeo. Horse and rider race around a cloverleaf pattern of barrels without knocking them over. The fastest completion wins.
Bull Riding: A thrilling event where cowboys aim to ride full-grown bucking bulls for 8 seconds. Bull riding is judged, with a maximum score of 100 points awarded based on the bull’s difficulty and the cowboy’s control. It’s known for its danger.

This substantial sum includes a guaranteed prize pool of $1.2 million for NFR qualifiers.
From 2015 to 2020, the NFR distributed a total of $10 million — $8.8 million in competition prize money and $1.2 million in guaranteed prize money for the qualifying rodeo stars, as highlighted in the PRCA press release. The overall purse then grew to $10,257,048 in 2021 and $10,900,098 in 2022.
With the updated purse in 2023, this increase will see round winners pocketing $30,706 per round and average winners earning an impressive $78,747. Each go-round will offer a total payout of $99,053, while the average total will reward participants with $297,159 per event.
